Allcock’s Aquatic Spider

Peccary Perfection

This is a Peccary Pig and he is not a particularly pleasant individual.

He lives in South America and I’m told he has a bit of a temper!

So if you fancy tying the fly below I suggest a visit to your local fly tying shop.

His hair comes in two grades. Absolutely bloody useless or perfect. Here you can see the difference – be warned!

There are many patterns for which you could use Peccary for building the body, but let’s go with my favourite the Klinkhammer.

You will need:
Hook: Kamasan B100 Number 12.
Thread: Sheer. Black. 14/0
Post: Aero Wing. Hackle: Black Saddle.
Thorax: Peacock Herl rope.

Step One

Run your thread down the hook forming a tapered body.

Remove a long Peccary bristle from its patch and soak it either in warm water or good old-fashioned saliva!

Tie in by the fine end at the base of the hook, now wind forward and secure 3-4mm behind the eye.

Carefully cover the Peccary with a very thin coat of Bug Bond Lite and seal with your UV torch.

Step Two

Secure the post material 2-3mm back from the eye.

Pass it under the hook, pull it up either side and bind the two halves tightly together to form the post.

Attach the hackle to the side of the post with tight wraps and trim the waste. Tie in the three strands of Peacock Herl that will form the thorax.

Step Three

Twist or plait the herl into a rope then wind forward and around the post to form the thorax.

Carefully wind the hackle down the post, 6 to 8 turns and whip finish either around the post or at the eye.

The smooth body will easily pierce the surface film and with a little floatant on the hackle I assure you they’ll come and get it!
